frequently asked questions

what is subscript about?

homestuck: subscript is an alternative continuation of homestuck taking place on earth c! the former players and now creators have been enjoying their lives in the new universe for six years now, but things have been a little too quiet for too long...

when does it take place?

subscript takes place after the credits/snapchat updates and before the epilogues would have started. six years have passed since act 7, and the main characters are all 22 years old.

how long is subscript going to be?

we don't have a set page count ready, since we're only writing about five updates ahead of our published pages, but we will very easily pass 1,000 pages, maybe even 2,000.

will june egbert be in subscript?

yes! we're going to write out june's entire transition on screen, so everyone can be along for the journey. we're going to be starting the process of that particular arc very soon, and it will end with june feeling happy and comfortable in her own skin.

is anyone else trans?

we are writing dave and dirk as trans men, kanaya, roxy, jade, and june as trans women, and nepeta, davepeta, jasprose, and calliope are non-binary!

why is roxy a trans woman instead of transmasc?

short answer: transmasc roxy in the epilogues was not a terrific example of trans representation, and trans woman roxy is a very important headcanon to this fandom.

long answer: roxy is only ever portrayed as a trans man or as non-binary in the epilogues and homestuck 2, both of which are "dubiously canon". that's not an excuse in itself, but roxy was coded as transfem throughout the original comic and transfem roxy has been a pretty widespread headcanon in the actual fandom. roxy's transition in the epilogues was barely touched upon, and that fact combined with the tone of both meat and candy as well as the "detransitioning" tag on the content warnings page makes it feel very forced and uncomfortable. he just isn't a very good example of representation, especially as one of the only explicitly trans characters. it made a lot of people really unhappy. i myself (the creator and the person writing this) am a trans man and i understand how important representation is in these kinds of stories, which is why we're including several trans men and non-binary characters in subscript. but trans women so often also get the short end of the stick when it comes to fictional representation and we feel that roxy being a trans woman is important to both her character and the story, which is why we will be writing her as such. it is perfectly understandable for you to be upset or dissatisfied and want to stop supporting us, but this is our stance on the matter.

will x character be there?

the majority of our main and supporting cast has already been shown, but almost every character who appeared in the original comic will be present at one point or another! however, characters whose existence depends on the events of the epilogues and/or homestuck 2 (ult dirk, the omega kids, etc.) will not be in subscript.

do you have a set update schedule?

we don't have a set calendar to follow, but we will generally be updating once a month or so, with some exceptions when we have something big to work on, such as a flash animation.

can i make subscript panel edits, icons, cosplays, etc.?

absolutely! just be sure to credit us for any art you use and tag us in anything you make so we can share it on our accounts :)
